The Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has assured that Indonesian citizens living in the Indonesia-Malaysia border region will have their voting rights guaranteed in both national and regional elections. Lolly Suhenty, a Bawaslu member, affirmed this commitment during a visit to the PB-02 boundary marker in Aji Kuning Village, Nunukan District, North Kalimantan.
Suhenty emphasized the importance of accurate data matching to verify the citizenship and voting eligibility of residents, including those whose homes extend into Malaysia. She conducted thorough checks in Aji Kuning Village and confirmed that Indonesian citizens residing in these border areas have the right to vote.
Among those confirmed was Ambo Daeng Mannappi, a 57-year-old resident whose home straddles the border. Mannappi, who lives with his family, expressed appreciation for Bawaslu’s efforts, stating that he and his family are eligible voters who regularly visit a nearby polling station.
Sebatik Island, divided between North Kalimantan and Sabah, Malaysia, exemplifies the unique challenges faced in ensuring voting rights for border residents.
