Defense Minister Prabowo Meets Malaysian King to Reaffirm Defense Ties

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, the King of Malaysia, at the Malaysian State Palace in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, September 7. The visit aimed to reinforce the defense ties between Indonesia and Malaysia and to discuss regional security issues.

In his statement following the meeting, Prabowo expressed Indonesia’s strong commitment to enhancing defense cooperation with Malaysia, highlighting the deep cultural bonds shared between the two nations. “I appreciate the strong relationship between our two countries and will continue to strive to improve cooperation, especially in the defense sector,” Prabowo said. He also conveyed gratitude for the King’s good wishes and emphasized his hope that the ongoing partnership would continue to grow for mutual benefit.

The meeting also focused on the upcoming 44th General Border Committee (GBC) Malaysia-Indonesia (Malindo) meeting, which Malaysia is set to host this year. Prabowo expressed optimism that this event would further cement the commitment of both countries to mutual security and prosperity.

Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar shared insights from their one-hour discussion on his official Facebook account, noting that they covered various regional and international issues. The post also recalled the long-standing friendly relationship between the Malaysian monarch and Prabowo, dating back to their joint military drill at Fort Bragg, United States, nearly four decades ago.

The meeting in Malaysia marked the conclusion of Prabowo’s Southeast Asia tour from September 5 to 7. Prior to Malaysia, Prabowo visited Brunei Darussalam, where he met with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to explore potential defense industry cooperation. He also engaged with leaders in Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, including Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Senate President Hun Sen, and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her father, Thaksin Shinawatra.

The tour underscored Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening regional defense partnerships and enhancing cooperation with neighboring Southeast Asian countries.
