On August 9, 2024, Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Soesatyo met with Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Advisor to the President of the Palestinian Authority for Religious Affairs, in Jakarta. During the meeting, Soesatyo reaffirmed Indonesia’s unwavering support for Palestinian independence, emphasizing the country’s commitment to fighting against colonialism, as outlined in the Indonesian Constitution.
Soesatyo praised the efforts of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the United Nations, and other nations working toward peace in Palestine. He also noted Al-Habbash’s update on the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people, who have been fighting for their independence for nearly a century.
Indonesia’s support for Palestine extends beyond health assistance; Soesatyo announced plans for business and investment cooperation, led by MPR Deputy Speaker Fadel Muhammad. This initiative aims to strengthen economic ties and support Palestine’s development.
The meeting included several notable figures, with Soesatyo accompanied by Muhammad and the Palestinian delegation featuring Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Zuhair Al-Shun. The Palestinian delegation was also joined by members of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU), including Chair Ulil Abshar Abdalla, Ahmad Suaedy, Deputy Secretary General Sidrotun Naim, and Ginanjar Sya’ban.
