In celebration of Hari Nusantara 2024, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) provided free nutritious meals featuring tuna fish for 2,000 elementary school students in Biak Numfor, Papua. This initiative is part of KKP’s commitment to supporting the national nutrition program led by the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto.
Machmud, the Secretary of the Directorate General for Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products at KKP, stated that the program is a long-term investment aimed at building a healthy and intelligent generation. He emphasized that fish, particularly tuna, is an important source of animal protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are vital for children’s growth and cognitive development.
KKP supports the nutritious meal program by providing essential data, including production maps, commodity distribution, and information about small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the fisheries sector. The agency also aids in promoting economic impact through fisheries products and cooperatives.
This initiative is part of the first trial of the Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG) program in Bitung, which involves distributing 12,000 nutritious fish meals, with 2,000 meals served between December 9–12, 2024, and 10,000 meals on December 13, 2024, coinciding with Hari Nusantara. KKP is also collaborating with BGN on similar trials in other regions, including Kampar (Riau), Pekalongan (Central Java), Biak (Papua), Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan), and Merauke (South Papua).
In Biak, the KKP provides the ingredients, supervises the cooking process, and assists with distribution and implementation at schools, involving KKP’s regional offices. The ingredients for the meals are selected based on local culinary traditions and the dominant fishery products in the area.
The Acting Secretary of Biak Numfor, ZL Mailoa, expressed full support for this initiative, highlighting that providing nutritious food to Papua’s children is crucial for preparing them as the future generation of Indonesia.
