President Joko Widodo has directed Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi to transition the status of Nusantara Airport in IKN from VVIP to commercial. This move is aimed at benefiting the local community, particularly for Hajj and Umrah flights.
The airport is expected to handle approximately 200,000 passengers by December 2024, with a long-term goal of accommodating up to seven million passengers annually once fully operational. Widodo plans to sign a presidential regulation to formalize this status change.
Previously, the airport was designated as a VVIP facility, primarily serving government functions. The president recently made his first landing at the airport, noting the smooth experience.
Minister Sumadi expressed confidence that the construction of the airport, featuring a 3,000-meter runway, will be completed by the end of 2024, reinforcing the region’s connectivity and flight infrastructure.
