BNPB Provides Aid to Earthquake Victims in West Java

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has initiated a comprehensive response to support victims of the recent earthquake in West Java by distributing both financial and logistical assistance.

On Thursday, BNPB Head Suharyanto led the handover of assistance, as detailed by Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center. The central government has allocated a total of Rp550 million (approximately USD 35,000) through BNPB to aid those affected.

Of this funding, Rp300 million (USD 19,000) has been directed to the Bandung district government for earthquake mitigation efforts, while Rp250 million (USD 16,000) has been allocated to the Garut district government.

In addition to financial support, BNPB is providing essential logistical aid to meet the needs of displaced individuals. This assistance includes:

  • Refugee and family tents
  • Basic food packages
  • Personal hygiene supplies
  • Mattresses and blankets
  • Tarpaulins
  • Lighting equipment
  • Ready-to-eat meals
  • Clothing for adults and children
  • Generators
  • Cleaning tools
  • Mineral water
  • Baby and toddler biscuits
  • Baby diapers
  • Feminine hygiene products

Muhari noted that Suharyanto will also hold a coordination meeting with local government officials to strategize on emergency disaster mitigation and to outline plans for rehabilitation and reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure and homes.

As of Thursday morning, data indicated that 30 villages across eight sub-districts in Bandung District were impacted by the earthquake, affecting approximately 21,696 individuals from 5,409 families. In Garut District, 209 individuals were affected across 11 villages in three sub-districts, with at least 204 houses damaged, including five places of worship.

The earthquake, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, struck the Bandung area on September 18 at 9:41 AM local time. The epicenter was located 25 kilometers southeast of Bandung District, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
