Nusantara Airport to Boost Traffic to Indonesia’s New Capital, Says Jokowi

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) highlighted the significant role of the new Nusantara Airport in East Kalimantan during the inauguration of various infrastructure projects on Wednesday. He noted that the airport is expected to enhance traffic to Indonesia’s future capital.

“I landed smoothly at Nusantara Airport, which currently features a 2,200-meter runway,” Jokowi remarked. The airport’s runway is set to be extended to 3,300 meters by December 2024 to accommodate larger aircraft.

The airport’s terminal, designed to reflect Kalimantan’s rich cultural heritage, is also scheduled for completion by the same deadline. Jokowi expressed optimism that once all transportation facilities are fully operational, visits to the new capital will increase, fostering a vibrant ecosystem that supports Nusantara’s growth as a center of government and economic activity.

“Infrastructure and facilities, both under construction and already completed, will create promising economic and business opportunities in Indonesia’s new capital city,” he stated, underscoring the importance of these developments for the region’s economic growth.
